“Kintsugi” is a Japanese term that means “join with gold.” It’s the art of repairing broken objects, often with gold lacquer, to create something even more beautiful than before. This concept resonated deeply with me, and I wanted to capture its essence in my painting.
“Kintsugi” represents the idea that something broken can be repaired and become even more stunning. Just like in life, we all experience breaks and cracks, but it’s how we repair and rebuild ourselves that truly matters. We emerge stronger, wiser, and more beautiful, with a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
The painting features a foundation with cracks, symbolizing the imperfections and rough starts we may have faced in life. Yet, despite these cracks, the painting still exudes a sense of beauty and hope.
The flowers in the painting are a deliberate mix of realistic and pixelized blooms. This represents the diversity of beauty in our world. There’s no one-size-fits-all definition of perfection. Beauty can be found in the perfectly imperfect, the messy, and the unconventional. Both the flawless and the flawed are beautiful in their own unique ways.
The color palette is a deliberate choice of deep blues, navy, mauve, and burgundy, punctuated with pops of lemon, lime, yellow, and gold. These colors evoke a sense of depth, richness, and luxury, while also symbolizing hope, renewal, and joy.
“Kintsugi” is a reminder that our imperfections and scars are a part of what make us beautiful. It’s a celebration of the human spirit’s capacity to heal, rebuild, and emerge stronger and more radiant than before.
